This removes a password you already know. It cannot recover a password you have forgotten, and neither can any other tool that says it can: modern PDF encryption derives its key through many thousands of hashing rounds, which is exactly what makes it worth using. What it does handle without any password is the other common case, a PDF that opens fine but refuses to let you print or copy from it.
What is Unlock PDF?
Remove a password you already know from a PDF, or strip the owner restrictions that stop a document being printed or copied from even though it opens fine. Can it remove a password I do not know?
No, and neither can anything else that runs in a browser. Modern PDF encryption derives its key through many thousands of hashing rounds, specifically so that guessing is impractical. Any site claiming to crack an unknown password is either talking about owner restrictions, which are a different thing entirely, or misleading you.
My PDF opens fine but will not let me print. What is that?
That is owner restrictions: the document is encrypted with an empty user password, so anyone can open it, but a permissions flag tells readers to refuse printing or copying. No password is needed to remove it, and this tool does so automatically as soon as you drop the file in.
What is lost when the password is removed?
Page content, text, images and layout are preserved exactly. Document metadata such as title and author is lost, because it is encrypted along with the content and cannot be read back once decrypted. Bookmarks, interactive form fields and annotations are not carried across either. The tool lists this on screen rather than letting you discover it later.
Why can the metadata not be recovered?
The strings in a PDF information dictionary are encrypted with the same key as the page content. Producing an unlocked copy means rebuilding the document from its pages, and the metadata does not survive that read. It is an honest limitation of doing this correctly rather than a shortcut.
Is this legal?
Removing protection from a document you are entitled to read, such as a bank statement or a payslip sent to you, is ordinary use. Circumventing protection on material you have no right to is not, and no tool changes that. This one cannot help with the latter anyway, since it needs the password.
Does my password get sent anywhere?
No. Both the file and the password stay in this tab. Consider what the alternative involves: typing the password to a confidential document into a web form that uploads both to someone else.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
