What is Markdown Viewer?

Open a .md file, or paste Markdown, and read it as a formatted document the way GitHub would show it. Every heading level, nested lists, task lists, tables, blockquotes, footnotes, GitHub alerts, emoji shortcodes and inline HTML styling such as <kbd>, <mark> and <details> are supported. Code blocks are syntax-highlighted, terminal transcripts show prompts and output separately, LaTeX maths renders with KaTeX, and Mermaid diagrams are drawn in place. A table of contents is built from the headings. Rendering happens entirely in your browser, and remote images are held back until you choose to load them, so opening a document never tells a third-party server you are reading it.

How do I use Markdown Viewer?

  1. Drop a .md file onto the page, choose one, or paste Markdown into the editor.
  2. Read the document; use the table of contents to jump between sections.
  3. Switch to Split to edit with a live preview, or Edit for the source alone.
  4. If the document has remote images, click "Load remote images" to fetch them.
  5. Copy the HTML, download a standalone .html file, or print and save as PDF.

When should I use Markdown Viewer?

Use the Markdown Viewer to read a README, notes or documentation file comfortably. To get HTML to paste into a CMS, use Markdown to HTML. To turn a web page into Markdown, use HTML to Markdown.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Markdown file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and rendered by your own browser; it is never sent to a server. Even remote images inside the document stay unloaded until you click "Load remote images", so no third party learns you opened it.

Why are some images not showing?

Remote images (https://…) are held back for privacy until you choose to load them. Relative images such as ./img/diagram.png point at files next to the .md on your disk, which a web page cannot read, so they show as a "not found" placeholder. Images embedded as data: URIs always display.

What Markdown syntax is supported?

GitHub Flavored Markdown: headings, emphasis, strikethrough, nested and task lists, tables with alignment, blockquotes, fenced code with syntax highlighting, footnotes, alerts such as > [!NOTE], emoji shortcodes, $inline$ and $$block$$ LaTeX maths, Mermaid diagrams, and safe inline HTML like <kbd>, <mark>, , and <details>.

How do I save the document as a PDF?

Click "Print / PDF" and choose "Save as PDF" in your browser's print dialog. The text stays selectable and searchable. You can also download a standalone .html file that opens offline with no scripts.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once the page has loaded. Code highlighting, maths and emoji are part of the viewer itself; the Mermaid diagram engine is loaded the first time a document contains a diagram, and works offline after that.

Is raw HTML in the Markdown safe?

Inline HTML is sanitised with DOMPurify: scripts, event handlers, iframes, forms and javascript: links are removed, and CSS that would fetch a remote file is stripped.
